Clan Roastery is based just outside Bude. We ethically source Speciality beans from small farmers across the globe. Our motivation is to raise awareness of specialty coffee… But what is specialty coffee? A term first used in 1978 by Erna Knutsen, ‘special geographic microclimates produce beans with unique flavour profiles, ethically sourced well roasted and properly brewed’. Hand roasting is a marriage of science and alchemy, each bean’s individuality affected by the terroir. Being part of the Specialty Coffee community are aim is to raise the standards with a collaborative and progressive approach.

From crop to cup coffee has been entwined with both the economic and cultural histories of many countries, dating back to the 6th Century in The Highlands of Ethiopia. 125 million people depend on coffee production throughout the world. All the coffee we use is from small farmers who sell through cooperatives. These growers are hugely innovative in terms of growing, whether planting different varieties or shade growing in rainforests. Determining their processing methods; washed, natural or honey? Many growing in ecological sensitive areas supporting the environment of endangered species. Some in politically unstable countries. Many embracing women growers in patriarchal societies. This year we are starting our own cooperative on a West African archipelago.
